Caring for your rug

Care comes down to one question: is your rug machine washable? Check your product page or label, then follow the matching steps below.

A few basics, for every rug

Whether it's washable or not, these hold true across the board.

  • Rotate the rug every few months so foot traffic and sunlight wear it evenly.
  • Keep it out of direct, prolonged sunlight — colors fade over time.
  • Blot spills right away with a clean cloth; don't rub them in.
  • Never use bleach or a harsh cleaner, even on a stain.
  • Use a rug pad underneath — it reduces wear and stops slipping.
  • When in doubt on a stubborn stain, stop and call a professional rather than risk the rug.

Washable

Machine washable rugs, made to hold up to a regular wash cycle.

Routine care

  1. Shake out or vacuum loose dirt before washing.
  2. For small spills, spot clean with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap.
  3. For a full wash, machine wash on cold, gentle cycle, alone or with similar colors — check that it fits your machine first.
  4. Skip the dryer if you can; air dry flat or over a rod.
  5. If you do tumble dry, use low heat and reshape the rug while it's still slightly damp.

Avoid

  • Hot water or high heat — it can shrink or distort the shape
  • Bleach or fabric softener
  • Wringing it out by hand
  • Washing an oversized rug in an undersized machine

Non-washable

Not machine washable — clean these with regular vacuuming and careful spot cleaning instead.

Routine care

  1. Vacuum regularly on a low or no-beater-bar setting to lift dust without damaging the weave or pile.
  2. Shake it out outdoors occasionally to loosen ground-in dirt.
  3. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — press, don't wipe.
  4. For a fresh stain, dab cold water with a little mild soap on a clean cloth, working from the outside of the spot inward, then blot dry.
  5. For a deep clean or a stain that won't lift, use a professional rug cleaner rather than a home carpet cleaner.

Avoid

  • Soaking or hosing it down
  • Steam cleaners
  • Scrubbing a stain with a brush
  • Outdoor use or prolonged dampness underneath
